MHA BIA 18 Reconstruction

3 MILES WEST OF WHITE SHIELD, MCCLEAN COUNTY, NORTH DAKOTA

The Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation (MHA Nation) is located on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in central North Dakota. BIA Highway 18 near White Shield is a 12-mile paved loop road that provides access to Lake Sakakawea and several homes, farms, and ranches. This road was in failing condition and needed immediate repair. There had been no major improvements to this road since it was originally constructed in the 1980s.

The roadway engineering project included:

  • Excavating (subcut) more than 40 major “blowouts”.
  • Placing gravel over existing asphalt pavement.
  • Reclaiming existing pavement and new gravel to create 8” of blended base aggregate.
  • Paving with 4” of hot mix asphalt (9 mi.) or a 3.5” hot mix asphalt overlay (3 mi.).
  • A new roadway with 4” of asphalt pavement and 8” of blended base aggregate.

Brosz Engineering “fast-tracked” the design, bidding, and construction administration. Using transportation team resources from multiple offices, Brosz quickly addressed survey and design requirements. During bidding, the team aggressively solicited bids from five local contractors which successfully brought the project in under budget.
